What to Expect in Grades 3-6
Students will have the opportunity this school year to read a variety of high-interest fiction and nonfiction texts. In order to support your child's reading and writing development, we will discuss strategies that will support their understanding of “What Reader’s Do?” before, during, and after reading. We will continue to target the following:
vocabulary instruction
decoding strategies
main idea and supporting details to summarize text
understanding "how" a text is organized (text structure) and "why" an author writes (author's purpose)
use graphic organizers (Thinking Maps/Boxes and Bullets) to deepen comprehension
Questions to Support Comprehension of Fiction:
What is the author really trying to say?
What does the main character really want?
What is this story really about?
What’s the message the author wants to get across to you?
Questions to Support Comprehension of Nonfiction:
What is the author’s purpose? (Persuade, Inform, Entertain)
Why do you think the author chose to present ideas in this way?
Please continue to support your child at home by encouraging him/her to read (fiction and nonfiction) for a minimum of 20 minutes per night. Have your child retell, make predictions, and summarize key points in the books he/she reads in order to support their reading development and make reading more meaningful. Read and reread! Re-reading helps students gain control over the words and derive meaning from the text. Thank you for all your support!
