What is APE? According to the National Consortium for Physical Education and Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities
(or “NCPERID”) - “Adapted Physical Education is Physical Education which has been adapted or modified, so that it is
as appropriate for the person with a disability as it is for a person without a disability.” (www.apens.org, March
2020) In other words, APE is based on the premise that the gross motor game and/or activity should be adapted,
(via modifications to rules and/or equipment, when and to the extend necessary), for the student. Modifications to
rules and/or equipment are implemented so that the student is able to participate as fully and meaningfully as
possible in activities that promote basic motor skill development, healthy fitness habits and an appreciation for
lifetime leisure skills.
