How do I join?
Membership in the Chapter is an honor bestowed upon a student. Students must meet all selection criteria to be members of this organization. Membership is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, service, and citizenship. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.
If I meet the grade requirements, am I automatically in?
No. GPA is only one of several criteria that a student must meet in order to be selected. Please refer to the previous question for a list of membership requirements.
When are invitations handed out?
Eligible candidates are decided at the beginning of 4th Quarter. These candidates will receive an eligibility to apply letter by the middle of the quarter. Applications will be due a week after they are passed out. An induction ceremony will be held at the end of the school year. This ceremony will formally admit the candidates into NJHS. Candidates are not considered to be members until and unless they have been inducted.
What if I’m a transfer student who was in NJHS at my old school?
A National Junior Honor Society member who transfers from another school and brings documentation to the CMS Chapter Advisor shall be accepted automatically as a member in the CMS Chapter. Transfer members must meet the Chapter's standards within one semester in order to retain membership.
What happens if I fail to live up to the NJHS standards after I become a member?
Members who fall below the standards that were the basis for their selection shall be promptly warned in writing by the Chapter Advisor. A copy of the warning shall be signed by the member and his or her parent and returned to the Chapter Advisor. The member shall be placed on probation and given one quarter to correct the deficiency. In case of flagrant violation of the school rules or civil laws a member is subject to immediate dismissal. More detailed information will be given to students upon their selection.
What is the time commitment involved?
Each member shall complete a minimum of 30 hours of service. The hours must be documented and the documentation turned into the Chapter Advisor.
We will also have chapter meetings at least once each month. These meetings will be held after school. All members are expected to attend.
Members who are elected as officers will have a greater time commitment. Information about officer elections will be given out during one of the first few meetings.
If I’m not in NJHS, can I still be in National Honor Society (NHS) in high school?
YES! Selection for NHS in high school is not based on NJHS membership. Students who meet their school’s requirements for NHS membership are eligible to join, regardless of their NJHS affiliation.
