The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) Board of Education defines acceleration as allowing a student to move through traditional educational organizations more rapidly, based on readiness and motivation.
Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) is the practice of assigning a student to a higher-grade level than is typical, given the student’s age, for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities in either Math or English/Language Arts.
SSA is an accelerative practice that allows students to show mastery of content of select elementary or middle school courses without having taken the course.
SSA testing is not available for high school credit courses.
Did you know Single Subject Acceleration is ONLY for elementary and middle school courses?
Students in 8th grade ONLY who wish to bypass a high school course will go through the
Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) process.
For instance, any student who wishes to bypass NC Math 1, 2, or 3 will follow the CDM process.
