Routines:
A daily routine is very important in the preschool classroom and at home. Routines is something preschoolers needs so they feel safe. Routines are consistent for children which makes the children feel safe. A predictable routine provides your child with stability and a greater understanding of his/her environment. At school our routines are developed for structure. Structure is very important at home and at school.
While your child is at school, your child will learn to take care of his or her own needs during our school day to prepare them for kindergarten. They will learn to unpacking their materials, signing in the morning, learn to walk through the hallways with as minimal support necessary for safety, participating in cleaning up after themselves, sitting at tables during eating and classroom tasks, etc. In order to maintain consistency between home and school please encourage similar behaviors at home.
Our Classroom:
The preschool classroom at West Lake Elementary is a Part Day Developmental Delayed Classroom with a morning and an afternoon session Monday through Thursday. Friday is Family School Partnership, Fridays are for supporting families and building the bond between school and families. West Lake is a year around school and preschool follows track 4. The classroom is a language rich environment designed for children with special needs age 3 to 5. All Students must be assigned to the classroom through an evaluation process at Wake County Preschool Services.
Lunch/Snack:
Our Morning Class eats snack at 9:45AM. Children are asked to bring a healthy snack and a drink to school with them daily. Snacks need to be in a lunch box or bag. All snacks and lunch boxes for the morning class need to be marked with your child’s name.
Our Afternoon Class will eat lunch at 11:30AM. Children may bring a bagged lunch from home or may purchase a school lunch. Children are asked to bring their lunch in a labeled lunch box or bag.
What To Bring To School:
Students will need a backpack (that will fit a 2 inch binder), lunch box and a change of clothes. Messy play (painting, water, sand and outside play) is an important part of our preschool day. Children should be dressed in clothes that can get messy and allow for fun, exploratory play both inside and outside the classroom. All personal belongings need to be labeled (extra clothes sweaters, jackets, etc.). Children need playground safe shoes, our playground has many different levels and surfaces, sneakers and or tennis shoes are highly recommended.
Please do not allow your child to bring toys to school they may get lost or broken.
Transportation:
Wake County Transportation is available to all preschool children to and from home. Children can apply for alternative address (such as a day care or babysitter address). This alternative addresses must be approved by Wake County Special Transportation. If you would like to access transportation, please let me know and allow for up to 2 weeks for the transportation to be put in place.
