Grading Policy:
Moore Square Magnet Middle’s Grading Policy
Wake County Public School System is committed to maintaining rigorous performance and achievement standards for all students and to providing a fair and consistent process for evaluating and reporting student progress that is understandable to students and their parents and relevant for instructional purposes.
Grading will be a school based system with all teachers using the following guidelines:
Grading Percentages in Infinite Campus-
Teachers will be calculating grades using the following percentages:
60% - Assessments, Quizzes, Projects, etc.
40% - Classwork and homework (while homework should not exceed 15%)
*All assignments are expected to be aligned with an instructional standard.
*Professional learning communities should align graded assignments to the extent possible.
Homework Plan-
Pursuant to board policy, see the expectations below:
Per Board policy suggestions, students in grades 6-8 should have no more than 90 minutes per day of homework. Homework cannot exceed 15% of the course grade. It is the expectation that teachers will assign homework in order to do the following:
prepare for coursework
extend and enrich class work
meet a documented need in student performance
provide opportunities for the development of initiative, creativity, and responsibility
Work assigned beyond the school day must only use materials that are readily available to students.
Late/Missing Work Policy -
Students are expected to submit work according to the teacher's deadline. Assignments not completed by the teacher’s assigned due date will be accepted up until the end of the unit/unit test/seminar, etc. Any assignment not turned in by the end of the unit will remain a 0 in the grade book. Teachers will be updating grades weekly. Please note, there may be instances where this extension policy is not applicable. For example, if students are expected to complete a seminar prep assignment, that assignment cannot be turned in after the seminar or if an exit ticket is expected at the end of the class period, it cannot be turned in the next day.
* Students that accumulate excessive missing assignments will be subject to ALC and/or meeting with an administrator about an action plan.
Make-up Work Due to Student Absence(s)-
For absences of one to three days, the student will have one day for each day absent. For absences exceeding three days, the student may have two days for each day absent to make up the work. Teachers should use discretion and may make exceptions in the case of students with excused absences that were not planned in advance, were beyond the student’s control, and/or are of a nature which would not support making up the work the day they return. There is no academic penalty for make-up work completed in the time frame stated above. All assignments are graded for full credit earned.
Test Corrections-
If a student scores below a 75% on any major assessment, they will be given the opportunity to retake and/or complete test corrections for the assessment in order to demonstrate mastery. The maximum grade a student can receive on the re-take or test corrections is 75%. The retake/test corrections must be completed in an agreed upon time frame between student and teacher.
*There may be some major assignments where this test corrections policy is not applicable.
Prevention/Intervention Plan-
For students at risk of academic failure, our school utilizes a MTSS framework which includes initial identification of students, plan for goals & delivery of services, family communication, and progress monitoring. Our ALC program also supports students for whom work completion, organization, etc. are barriers to success.
