UNDERSTANDING CRISIS
A crisis occurs when a person does not have the skills, abilities, or capabilities to cope with a difficult, intense, and/or distressing situation. People may experience crisis for a variety of reasons including but not limiting to:
grief/loss (of a loved one, job, home)
relationship problems
medical issues
violence and trauma
natural disaster
mental health issues
POSSIBLE SYMPTOMS OF A CRISIS
self-harm
suicidal ideations/attempts
threats/attempts to harm others
extreme agitation, anxiety, or panic
verbal or physical hostility
inability to communicate
disorientation/confusion
The nature of a crisis is highly subjective and individualized. While one person may be extremely affected by an event, another person may experience little or no negative effects. If a crisis is not dealt with in a healthy way, however, it can lead to long-lasting mental, physical, and social health problems.
