Reflective Practices

As defined in the Oxford dictionary, reflection is a serious thought or consideration. Each day I take time to reflect on my teaching and then modify my instruction.

Self Reflection

While working on my National Board teaching certification I began to change the way I reflected on my instruction. One part of national board application process, requires that you record and view your teaching. At first this way very difficult to watch myself on camera! However, I realized what a valuable tool it is. Now I will often record myself when teaching a new concept to students. After the lesson, I will go back and watch the video making notes of my areas of strength and weakness. I will then choose ONE weakness to work on over the course of the next month and record myself when focusing on that specific skill.

Practices which facilitate student reflection

Typing Reflection

Using sentence starters, or cloze passages helps student begin the reflection process. Additionally, the use of cloze passages scaffolds learning for students who need support in writing and expressing their ideas.
