ART COURSE PROGRESSION OVERVIEW

ART 1: Beginning

• Introduction to design elements and principles

• Drawing, painting, graphics, fibers, 2D design, art history, 3D design

• Emphasis on foundational techniques and exploration across media

ART 2: Intermediate

• Deeper study of design and technical growth

• Drawing, painting, printmaking (silk screening, linocuts, woodcuts), art history, 3D design (wood, clay, fibers)

• Builds on ART 1; encourages refinement and repetition of design principles

ART 3: Accomplished (Honors)

• Advanced understanding of art processes and history

• Experimental media, culturally significant works, extensive art history

• Requires rigorous study and excellence; students produce sophisticated, meaningful art

ART 4: Advanced

• Personalized, thematic portfolio development

• Drawing/Painting, Color & Design, artist research, chosen concentration

• Students work independently, solve complex visual problems, and critically assess their own and others’ work
