( above right) Mrs. Kennedy's Self-Portrait. Stetson University, DeLand, FL. Oil on Canvas. 42 x 52 inches, "Pressure of a Master."
This self-portrait was created in the beautiful studio at Stetson University. Originally, I painted myself right in the middle of the canvas-until my professor, the renowned Gary Bolding (who also appears in the painting), pointed out that it threw off the visual balance. His solution? "Start over." As you can see, I wasn't exactly thrilled. In the scene, I'm painting from a mirror, which makes me appear left-handed, and my paintbrush deliberately points toward my professor as he peers over the students as they work—a nod to the ever-present pressures of the master. Ultimately, the piece proved to be a success.
The moral of this story is that criticism and challenges- though uncomfortable in the moment-can push you to create something even better than you first imagined. It's also a gentle reminder that art (and life) often improves when we're willing to step back, adjust, and see things from a different perspective-even if it means starting over.
