In Unit 1, we will cover chapters 1-5 in A Long Walk to Water, as well as read informational articles which will provide background knowledge on Sudan's civil war, the on-going battle between the Nuer and Dinka tribes, and how the civil war affected the lives of both tribes. The mid-unit assessment will challenge students to find quotes from the book that specifically show how culture, time, and place have influenced the identities of the novel characters Nya and Salva. The end-unit assessment challenges students to locate quotes that specifically show Dinka tribe perspectives.

In Unit 2, we will continue reading the novel (chapters 6-18), and most of the reading will be done at home for homework. We will cover juxtaposition and review theme. The mid-unit assessment will compare an informational text about water in Sudan to the novel, specifically how the author used historical information to create Nya's story. The end-unit assessment is a performance task in the form of an essay.

Unit 3 brings students back to a deep exploration of character and point of view .
