Reading at home with a parent or guardian has proven to increase reading excitement, stamina, and reading comprehension. It is important to foster a love of reading by fostering choice in what students read at home. Allow students to choose books at home that interest them, even if they are above their reading level, to increase student interest in reading.
Below you will find three simple reading activities and links to reading resources that you can use at home with your child.
Read with your child and have them write about what they read!
Examples:

2. Write about the setting, characters, or plot.
3. Write about 3 details and the main idea
Read with your child and have them draw about what they read!

1. Keep a reading doodle book
2. Draw and label the characters, setting, or plot.
3. Draw some details from the story
Talk with your child about the story during/after reading!
Turn subtitles on when kids are watching TV!
Examples:
1. Ask questions about important characters, settings, and plot details.
2. Talk about lessons or themes in the book.
3. Talk with your child about their favorite part of the book.
Epic! is a site that provides students with access to 35,000 books, audio books, learning videos, quizzes, etc. Many of the books have a green icon that says 'Read to Me' which means that when a child looks at the story, it will read it aloud to them.
Storyline Online is a site that has videos of famous actors and actresses reading aloud storybooks. They read aloud the book and illustrations accompany the story to make it fun for students.
Teach Your Monster to Read is a great free website that helps children with their phonetic skills by creating a monster and doing fun games with it.
Starfall offers various resources to help kids and young learners develop reading and writing skills through interactive games, activities and phonics.
This section in PBS provides a wide variety of activities and games to help kids develop their reading and literacy skills.
