Kindergarten & 1st Grade students requiring enrichment of grade level standards may participate
in our Nurturing Program (a.k.a. "KIT" for "Kids Into Thinking"). Small groups are formed via teacher recommendation and are fluid, changing based on student needs as classes work their way through their curricula. An AIG teacher or trained Parent Volunteer pulls students for their 30-minute small
group session several times per quarter to deeply explore grade-level Science content by applying
Math and ELA skills.
A student's participation in the Nurturing program does not indicate an AIG identification.
2nd Graders have a variety of advanced learning services available to them:
Semester 1:
In-class collaboratively planned lessons from AIG and 2nd Grade teachers
Whole-class CogAT exposure with Mrs. Morgan
Explorers program is similar to Nurturing in that it is small group pull-out instruction with AIG teacher after CogAT testing is complete and groups are fluid based on teacher recommendations.
Participation in small group does not identify students for AIG.
Semester 2:
In-class collaboratively planned lessons from AIG and 2nd Grade teachers
CogAT screening in February & March for all 2nd Graders and, for those who qualify, IOWA screener
Students may qualify for AIG services based on CogAT &/or Iowa scores. Parents notified in writing during Quarter 4.
For students that demonstrate gifts/talents outside of standardized testing, teachers may request students for portfolio review:
Portfolio data collection requires multiple points of data including mClass, STAR Math, NC Check Ins, EOGs, report cards, unit tests, classwork, class participation, Gifted Rating Scale as completed by homeroom teacher).
School-based Committee for Gifted Education reviews this data for referral and/or identification decisions.
Portfolio students who do not qualify for AIG via portfolio during Q4 of 2nd Grade become "Talent Development" students and their data is reviewed quarterly by the committee. Caregivers are notified in writing during Q4.
AIG pull-out instruction begins at the start of the next school year.
If you are an caregiver to a student currently working with Mrs. Morgan in the Nurturing or Explorers program and you are not receiving the quarterly newsletter, please email Mrs. Morgan to get on our mailing list! jmorgan8@wcpss.net
