Meet Mr. Hartman

Mr. Nathan Hartman is the Band Director at Zebulon Gifted & Talented Magnet Middle School: Center for Advanced Studies & STEM located in Zebulon, North Carolina. He is a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, having attended Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School. In addition to the 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Concert Bands, Mr. Hartman directs the Zebulon Magnet Jazz Band and Pep Band, both of which he created as additional musical opportunities for his students to explore and enjoy. He is an Alumni of the Iota Omicron Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, where he served as the Vice President of Membership. Currently, he serves the East Central District Bandmasters Association as the Middle School Auditions Chair as well as the Fine Arts Department Chair for Zebulon Magnet Middle School. Mr. Hartman believes that all students, regardless of their background, should have access to a high quality music education.

Mr. Hartman received his Bachelor's of Music in Music Education, with a concentration in Instrumental Music (K - 12), from Appalachian State University in 2021. He graduated Summa Cum Laude. During his time at App State, Mr. Hartman was involved with the Marching Mountaineers, where he served as Drum Major for two years, the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Video Game Ensemble, and the Community Music School. His first position was at Cape Fear High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he, alongside supportive parents and community members, spearheaded the creation of the Cape Fear Bands & Ensembles Boosters to support the financial needs of the program. Under his Direction, the Cape Fear Bands & Ensembles Program earned various Awards at Marching Band Competitions and Music Performance Adjudication (MPA), including Superior Ratings. Mr. Hartman was named Student Teacher of the Year (2021) for Appalachian State University as well as Beginning Teacher of the Year (2022) at Cape Fear High School. He has also been recognized by the Town of Zebulon (2024) for his excellence in teaching and dedication to his students, school, and community. In 2026, Mr. Hartman received the Young Director Award of Excellence from the East Central District Bandmasters Association in recognition of his achievements and service.
