The Next NC Scholarship is a financial aid program that helps most North Carolinians from households making $80,000 or less pursue higher education by fully covering tuition and fees at any community college or more than half, if not all, of tuition and fees to attend any public university in the state. The best part? It’s money that doesn’t have to be repaid.
Students attending a community college will receive at least $3,000. That’s more than the cost of full-time tuition, which means qualifying North Carolinians can choose from any of the 58 community colleges across the state and have all of their tuition and fees 100% covered.
Those attending a public university in North Carolina will get a minimum of $5,000. That pays for more than half, if not all, of tuition and fees at any of the 16 public universities in the state.
Applying is simple. Just submit the FAFSA form. If you’re eligible, you’ll receive the Next NC Scholarship. There are no additional forms to fill out.

Lastest update for the 2024-2025 FAFSA
2024-25 FAFSA To Launch by December 31
The 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will launch by December 31, 2023, according to an announcement posted in November by the US Department of Education (ED). Since 2016, the FAFSA has opened on October 1, meaning that students have three fewer months to complete the form this cycle. This announcement clarifies that the newly revised application will meet the federal statutory requirement to open prior to January 1, 2024.
Although the announcement’s language of “by December 31” implies that the FAFSA could launch sooner, the National College Attainment Network (NCAN) recommends that for planning purposes, our member organizations use December 31 as the effective opening date.

College Deadlines
Each college may have its own deadline. Check with the college(s) you’re interested in attending. You may also want to ask your college about its definition of an application deadline. Is it the date your FAFSA form is processed or the date the college receives your processed FAFSA data?

Some of the parent and student questions addressed during this session include:
Does my child need to complete the FAFSA first or does that matter? Will I be signing my child's FAFSA and will my child sign my FAFSA as well?
What should seniors be discussing now with their parent(s)/guardian(s) to prepare financially for college?
What is the difference between CSS and FAFSA?
What are the best places to find scholarships?
What are the basics of financial aid? How do I sign up? What is the latest to sign up?
What are some scholarships for children who’s parents are in the military?
Will I receive financial aid as a h4 dependent?
Need more clarification on completing the FASFA and do I complete it from my students page?
How long do RDS numbers last? My son has already gotten an RDS number in the past.
We had a lot of trouble navigating FAFSA and got kicked out a lot.
What if you have problems with data retrieval tool?
I have a copy of my parent's 2021 W2 and Tax Return, so should I still use the IRS Retrieval tool?
I am in the process of moving and changing my address. Should I wait till I officially move into the new house to submit my FAFSA?
Do we apply to college specific scholarships after being admitted into the college/are enrolled?
Another moving question, I am moving into the house this month so on the FAFSA should I put the address I am moving to or my previous address?
My parent already has a FAFSA account that was created about 4 years ago and I am the first in my family to be applying for the FAFSA. Does that count as a FSA ID?
Two questions that were submitted but not addressed in the virtual session:
Have you heard of the DEA? Which is the Dependant Education Allowance? When should you apply for it? Also the Children of War of Veterans of NC?
The DEA program is one that provides training and educational opportunities to eligible dependents and survivors of certain Veterans (https://www.benefits.gov/benefit/288 . I also checked the website for the NC Scholarship for Children of Wartime Veterans and found out their application deadline is February 14.
