THE 2024- 2025 FAFSA IS OPEN.
6 Things Students Need Before They Fill Out the 2024–25 FAFSA® Form
2024-25 FAFSA To Launch by December 31
The 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will launch by December 31, 2023, according to an announcement posted in November by the US Department of Education (ED). Since 2016, the FAFSA has opened on October 1, meaning that students have three fewer months to complete the form this cycle. This announcement clarifies that the newly revised application will meet the federal statutory requirement to open prior to January 1, 2024.
Although the announcement’s language of “by December 31” implies that the FAFSA could launch sooner, the National College Attainment Network (NCAN) recommends that for planning purposes, our member organizations use December 31 as the effective opening date.

Understand the Full Impact of Your FAFSA® Application
Not only is your FAFSA form an application for federal student aid, it also is used in determining your eligibility for certain state and school financial aid.
Your FAFSA information is shared with the colleges and/or career schools you list on your application. The financial aid office at a school uses your information to figure out how much aid you may receive at that school.
Note: The school might also have other forms for you to fill out to get school aid, so check with the financial aid office to be sure.
Your information also goes to your state's higher education agency, as well as to agencies of the states where your chosen schools are located. Many states have financial aid funds that they give out based on FAFSA information
