Quarter 1

ELA

EL Module 1: Overcoming Learning Challenges

  • This Module uses literature and informational text to introduce students to the power of literacy and how people around the world overcome learning challenges. In Unit 1, students begin to build their reading skills; by hearing stories read aloud, reading books in their in their entirety, and reading more challenging excerpts closely. Throughout their readings, students determine the gist, identify the central message, and consider what key details convey that message in the text. In Unit 2,students consider how geography and where one lives in the world affects how someone accesses books. Students will apply their learning by writing a simple informative paragraph about how people access books around the world. Finally, in Unit 3 students focus more on what it means to be a proficient and independent reader. They continue to read literature about characters who are motivated to learn to read and overcome struggles to do so. Students assess their challenges as readers, and identify strategies to overcome those challenges. This unit includes a heavy emphasis on building reading fluency.

Students focus on understanding multiplication as the total of equal groups. They will also be introduced to the importance of Math Talk and good collaborative discussions that rely heavily on math vocabulary.

Unit 2: Using Data to Solve Problems

  • In this unit, students will practice interpreting picture graphs and bar graphs by answering specific questions that connect to the data set. Students will also use a frequency table to generate scaled picture graphs and bar graphs while working with up to four categories of data. Throughout the unit, students will continue to use their knowledge of addition and subtraction, to answer questions about the data presented.

Unit 3: Stories with Addition and Subtraction

  • This unit on addition and subtraction builds on students’ previous work with these operations in earlier grades. Students will focus on applying strategies such as place value drawings, expanded form, and numbers lines to add and subtract numbers up to and including 1,000. Students will simultaneously review concepts about place value, regrouping, and ungrouping. Throughout the unit, students will use these operations within the context of one and two step story problems.
