Unit 3

Stories with Addition & Subtraction

The focus of this unit is on addition and subtraction within 1000.  Students focus on understanding and applying strategies, such as place value blocks, place value drawings, expanded form/method, and numbers lines to add and subtract numbers up to and including 1,000.  Throughout the unit, students will use these operations within the context of one and two step story problems. They will also develop an understanding of how place value can then be used to round numbers. Rounding and other estimating strategies will help students have a better understanding of the reasonableness of their final answers when finding a solution to a math problem.

Students will be able to...

  • Use expanded form to decompose numbers to solve addition and subtraction problems (i.e. 435 = 400 + 30 + 5)

  • Apply the relationship between addition and subtraction to solve problems

  • Solve two-step word problems using addition and subtraction

Vocabulary: Addition, Place Value, Expression, Difference, Decompose, Number line, Value, Estimation, Actual, Operation, Lesser, Addend, Equation, Rate of Ten, Ungroup, Subtotals, Precision, Rounding, Exact, Symbol, Compare, Situation, Sum, Unknown, Subtraction, More, Expanded Form, Partition, Inverse Operation, About, Comparison, Relationship, Add to/Take from, Regroup, Place Value Drawing, Missing Addend, Fewer, Expanded Method, Greater, Nearest Multiple, Reasonable, Put Together/Take Apart, Compensate and Combine Strategies

Unit 4

Making Sense of Multiplication and Division

The focus of this unit is for students to build a conceptual understanding of multiplication and division.  Students will use the properties of multiplication along with multiple strategies including equal groups, arrays, and repeated addition/subtraction to solve and represent multiplication and division problems.  Students will apply these strategies to solve and represent one and two step story problems.  Throughout the unit students will continue to explore patterns in multiplication as they work with various fact families.

Students will be able to...

  • Decompose a factor as a strategy for solving a multiplication problem

  • Demonstrate that the order of the factors does not matter when you are multiplying (or adding) numbers

  • Use a variety of strategies, like arrays and repeated addition, to model multiplication

  • Use repeated subtraction (measurement model) and/or fair share (partition model) when solving a division problem

  • Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurements quantities

  • Use equal groups/equal shares as a strategy to solve multiplication and division word problems

  • Use various representations to show an unknown

  • Use multiplication and/or division to solve problems with an unknown factor

  • Illustrate and explain using the relationship between multiplication and division

  • Use addition, subtraction, and multiplication to solve two-step word problems

  • Use concrete and pictorial place value models to find the product of a one-digit whole number by a multiple of 10

Vocabulary: Quotient, Properties, Place Value, Associative Property of Multiplication, Distributive Property, Divisor, Break Apart, Zero Property of Multiplication, Division, Dividend, Unknown, Multiplication Identity Property, Repeated Subtraction, Divide, Related Facts, Partial Product, Multiple, Commutative Property of Multiplication

Unit 5

Reasoning with Shapes and Their Attributes

The focus of this unit is to help students identify, describe, and reason about the attributes of various quadrilaterals, including parallelograms, rectangles, rhombi, trapezoids, and squares.  They will be able to recognize and draw examples and non-examples of quadrilaterals.  Students will practice using precise vocabulary to describe and recognize shapes.  Students will also learn how to compose and decompose quadrilaterals and triangles.

Students will be able to...

  • Reason with two-dimensional shapes and their attributes

  • Investigate, describe, and reason about composing triangles and quadrilaterals and decomposing quadrilaterals

  • Recognize and draw examples and non-examples of quadrilaterals, including rhombi /rhombuses, rectangles, squares, parallelograms, and trapezoids

  • Compose and decompose quadrilaterals using triangles and quadrilaterals

Vocabulary: Two-dimensional, Rectangle, Parallel, Decompose, Attribute, Square, Angle, Quadrilateral, Parallelogram, Side, Rhombus, Trapezoid, Compose
