Literacy is the cornerstone of all learning, and our instruction is designed to help students build strong reading, writing, and language skills. We emphasize comprehension—both oral and written—so that students learn to connect deeply with texts and read for meaning. Our literacy instruction includes a balanced focus on both fiction and non-fiction, using the EL Education curriculum to guide our comprehension lessons.

In addition to reading, we dedicate time each day to focus on writing instruction. Students will engage in mini-lessons that introduce key aspects of the writing process, followed by independent writing time. They will participate in peer and teacher conferences to refine their work, with an emphasis on content development, structure, revision, editing, and conventions.

As second graders continue to grow as readers, phonics remains a critical component of our literacy block. Students will receive explicit instruction in phonics patterns, decoding strategies, and rules during both whole group and small group lessons, tailored to their individual needs. Aligned with the Science of Reading, we use the Letterland program for phonics instruction. Vocabulary development is also a key focus, and students will learn to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words through rich exposure during reading and targeted vocabulary lessons.
