Spontaneous Competition
Spontaneous Competition
Besides preparing for the long-term problem competition, there is a second type of competition called Spontaneous.
Below are sample Spontaneous problems for you to try. Keep in mind that the Spontaneous competition is team members only (no coach) and you have no idea what problem they will give you. You will generally have about 7 minutes to complete the problem - from reading it, asking questions of the judges, and then doing the problem. This is stressful! The best way to prepare is to do loads of Spontaneous problems to build confidence.
Sample Spontaneous Problems:
You are encouraging your classmates to reduce, reuse, recycle! Name a new use for old paper clips. For example: a paper clip necklace.
Name things that are inside of something, that is inside of something else. For example, a foot is inside a sock, which is inside a shoe.
Gather together toothpicks and gumdrop candies. Build the largest polyhedron you can in 7 minutes. For example, a soccer ball.
Using one peice of paper and 1 foot of masking tape, build the longest bridge you can in 7 minutes between two chairs.
