Instructions:
Title Your title to any of your artworks is your choice. It should be relevant to your solution to the project. It can be what I named the project in class but I encourage you to think of a title that is creative, relatable and appropriate.
Artist statement Your artist statement for any of your artworks in Artsonia is an opportunity for you to reveal to viewers your insights -- maybe write about your idea, what media you used (like paint, colored pencils, clay, paper mache, pen & ink, etc.), what were any challenges you may have encountered, what did you think of your final product, would you do anything differently, and did you like the project overall?
Your project grade
I will be grading your final art product and process based on the project objectives, your originality, planning, craftsmanship, use of time in class and your artist statement. Reflecting on your project in your artist statement is such an important part of the design process that I count it 20%. So complementing your artwork with an artist statement in Artsonia is not only a convenient way for me to add credit to your overall score, but it also serves to support your piece in your overall portfolio -- something that you will be able to carry with you on into high school.

Day 2 - 5
Intro to Appropriation: to properly borrow, recycle or sample aspects of human made visual culture. Watch slide presentation together.
Getting to know you.
Intro to Exploring the Agamograph
Objectives for Agamograph:
*Show your range of talents with media and art techniques.
*Explore your interests and reveal your personal experiences.
*Take this opportunity to be clever in solving this problem.
There are 2 points of view! How are you going to uniquely represent the 2 sides?
1) You may choose to produce opposites (i.e., grayscale vs. color, subjects areas).
2) You may choose a theme (characters, scenes, people/portraits, book covers, master studies, animals, travel/places.
3) You may be metaphorical: there are two sides to every story.
4) You may use different media (pen & ink vs. colored pencil).
You are graded on: Good use of class time (using all the days to refine your idea and finished product), craftsmanship, creative idea/unique, effort, and written artist statement (revealing much about yourself and your artistic process).
Day 3 - 5
Begin or continue to carefully transfer your agamograph sketches onto your final project papers.
See last week's agenda above to be reminded of project objectives! Make sure to post your beautiful brainstorming sketch results on you idea graphic organizer and title "planning sketches" under the Agamograph Project.
Take your time to do your best in applying different media of your choice:)
Continue working through Thursday, getting assistance in setting up the final formatted piece.
Day 5
Post your final project to Artsonia. You may post as a video to show your surprise element in real time! Or you may choose to take a separate photo from each angle.
Day 1 - 5
Introduction to a fun week-long "Toon Me Project"
Select a photo of yourself or a friend, pet, etc. and print in black and white. Divide and create a "cartoon" side of the photo! You can be really creative with how you do this. You may tap into your digital talents or illustrate by hand, showing your range using media of your choice!
Day 1 - 5
Intro to Sketchbook Project
Grade 7 Sketchbook Project
You have been briefly introduced to this project and its objectives. You may have been thinking about what theme you wish to pursue for your cover designs. You may view past student examples for some ideas.
First, you will use scissors and collect images from magazines, newspapers and box of random scrap papers in class. Magazines are placed in the back of the room, and there are extra ones in the “magazine” drawer next to the sink. There is also a box of scrap paper on the back counter for use in collages. I have enough plastic bags for each student to label one with a Sharpie for image collections. If you bring in your own materials, that is fine. However, if you prefer your own materials and forget to bring them, you must use what is available in the classroom so as not to be off-task. I have prepared covers for each student. You need to write your name on them and are responsible for working with them all week. Use glue sticks, not liquid glue.
Supplies needed: bags for collection of images labeled with Sharpie, scissors on cart.
Day 1 - 2 Collect images only (plastic bags)
You will be designing your own book to fit your personality, whether it’s whimsical, quirky, sporty, colorful or just aesthetically pleasing. Part of the project challenge is to use found imagery cleverly, so no one should be printing out custom images in class. If a student does breach this project objective and use personal photos, etc., they must bring these in from home and work on the project only in the art room. NO ONE may WORK at home on this project to get ahead.
Laminate covers, add pockets if you wish. Punch holes in covers using templates (mark before punching, align)
Note: Some students will be ahead of others and you may work to prepare books for binding – and then you may even proceed to bind your book and begin sketching.
(After students take the quality photo of their end product, I have you all stop and work with others to help them complete their hole-punching and binding. Only then should you begin sketching in your books. One suggestion is to shade a sphere and other forms on your first couple of pages since that always looks good!
Day 3 Gather about 20 sheets, align with covers, mark holes and punch about 5 pages at a time.
Day 4 Clip pages and the covers together, stitch together using the Japanese binding method.
Once completed, label inside cover with name, take your best photo with class phone camera. Write a Reflection paragraph or two (your artist statement) on your first or second sketchbook page about your process, your challenges, your idea for the collage and how it all turned out.
Note: Use the back bookshelves and/or flat files to store students’ projects by elective period. You MAY NOT take your projects home until I return. You may take an in-progress photo with the class phone as well as a final photo though😊
Track 2 projects should be clearly labeled with your name on the inside front cover, your grade and track, and neatly stacked by class period in the back bookshelves for grading before you track out.
Day 5 Refine all your work, complete everything if you have not, use your time to enjoy sketching in your book. There are prompts and a guide on "sketchbooking" that you may review. Final projects should be clearly labeled with your name on the inside front cover, your grade and track, and neatly stacked by class period in the back bookshelves. for grading.
Day 1 - 2 Gather about 20 sheets, align with covers, mark holes and punch about 5 pages at a time. Paper clip covers and aligned hole-punched sheets together and wait for binding instructions.
Supplies needed for step 4: template to mark holes, hole punchers, paper clips.
Step 5: See binding demonstration and bind your sketchbook. Take great photo(s) of your cover(s) and post to your portfolio. Write about your process and how you selected your images for your artist statement. These written reflections in your portfolio count up to 20 points toward your overall project grade.
Step 6: Design your first blank page cover sheet; include your name. Begin working on some sketchbook studies, such as drawing and shading different forms (cube, sphere, pyramid).
Take photos of your best sketches and post them under "Sketchbook Studies" project in Artsonia.
Day 1 - 4 Watercolor Landscapes! (Remember, we are out of school on Tuesday.)
Track 4 students have already started their guided, in-class watercolor landscapes.
Enjoy this 3-day guided, step-by-step watercolor landscape painting demonstration in the art room!
You will have an opportunity to work independently on refining your final for your portfolio.
Day 1 Take great photo(s) of your Best Watercolor Landscape(s) for your grade and post to Artsonia.
Day 2 - 4 Intro to Original Watercolor Painting Project
Step 1: Pick your subject by researching on the first day of introduction.
Step 2: You will draw outlines in pencil before starting your washes for backgrounds. Remember: layering paints is most important!!
Step 3: Apply your wet-in-wet washes first and allow to dry overnight with each layer.
Step 4: Only then do you apply your dry-brush details.
Step 5: Refine! Be careful not to overpaint your work because it will affect the paper (tears are common when over-applying watercolors without allowing drying time in between layers).
Day 1 - 5
Artist Card Project
Research artists on the artist card list provided in the art room or the link below. Beside each name, write a few words describing the style of the artist's artwork (fun, modern, realistic, colorful, gloomy, futuristic, serious, etc). Do you like it? Why or why not?
The following project outline is provided in Canvas for your convenience. You will be graded for the work you submit in class and post in your Artsoni portfolio. Have fun with this project!
1. Day 1 - 2: Research each artist using your laptop. You may work with a partner.
2. Day 3 - 4: Use this template, making sure to "make a copy" first and save to your computer. In your own words, create an interesting summary of the artist's life and artwork style. You will share your final with Ms. Barlow to print.

3. Day 5 - 8: Pick one artwork from your artist and create your own master study/interpretation of the work using media of your choice.
Create the work on the 7" x 5" paper in the art room. This will be glued onto the bio side. See final examples for inspiration and understanding.
Day 1 - 5
Complete your Artist Card Project and post to your portfolio if you haven't already.
Intro to Magazine Mosaic
Check out the full Magazine Mosaic lesson plan in the video below to see how to apply the cut-out pieces of color you will find and gather from magazines in class. Remember, you do not need to stick with fruit or vegetables but may select a famous artwork (or an original piece) to translate into a mosaic -- which is very cool. You can view some awesome student examples on the front board.
