Wakemedia Monthly

August 2022

Welcome back!

We’re excited to kick off this new school year with all of you. Victory chocolate for everyone! You made it to today, and that is worth celebrating. (See AAT Day course for victory chocolate explanation.)

AAT Day reminder

The AAT Day/Opening Meeting for this school year is not being held in person or synchronously. While we prefer to see you and share physical space to launch into a new school year, we have done our best to construct a virtual, asynchronous course in Canvas in which you'll find important BOY information from the Digital Learning and Libraries team as well as colleagues representing adjacent teams and departments. Course content includes information about:

  • Leading your MTAC in the 2022-2023 school year

  • Canvas Expansion

  • Technology updates (including updates from Inventory Management and information about NCWiseOwl)

  • Reflections on library data from 2021-2022 school year

  • Lesson planning support for elementary school librarians

  • Information especially for new school librarians

To access the "meeting," register in WakeLearns: Course #14779.

Once registered, the course will appear on your Learning Central dashboard (orange Canvas). Title: Digital Learning and Libraries AAT Day 2022

The course will remain open for credit through August 31st. After that date, you will still retain access to the course information but will no longer be able to earn credit for your participation.

NCWiseOwl in NCEdCloud

NCDPI migrated all NCWiseOwl resources to NCEdCloud. The NCWiseOwl website is no longer available. WCPSS Tech Services has updated the WakeID Portal to include links to Britannica and EBSCO. Students and staff will be prompted to login to NCEdCloud when they click on these links, but then will be directed to the relevant resource. Instructions for logging into EBSCO and Britannica can be found here. Available applications vary by grade level. More information can be found here.

*NOTE: This is an improvement from the original work-around we implemented at the beginning of July. If you already viewed the NCWiseOwl section of AAT day, please note that both the video and tip sheet have been updated to reflect this change. We believe it is a better solution for students and staff and will limit the barrier to use for these resources.

Destiny Collections and NCWiseOwl Links

If you created a Collection in Destiny that included permalinks to EBSCO resources (articles or ebooks), you’ll find that those links no longer work properly. At this moment, the only solution is to delete the item from the Collection, and then add it again but edit the link according to these instructions provided by DPI:

We are working with Follett’s Product Management team to request the ability to edit the URL/link in an existing Collection item, but no updates have been made yet. See the NCWiseOwl section of the AAT day course for more detailed information.

Discovery Education Update

This message about Discovery Education was recently shared with principals:

Discovery Education will be available for teachers and students in elementary schools only for the 2022-23 school year. Middle and high schools no longer have access to this digital resource. Middle and high school science teachers will be provided digital content available to them for the 2022-23 school year. Reach out to your content specialist for any assistance.

Big Universe and myON for elementary schools

WCPSS will no longer provide subscription access to Big Universe. Rather, all K-5 students will have access to myON for ebooks. Direct any questions about myON to your instructional facilitator or literacy coach.

LETRS Manuals for elementary schools

Guidance for LETRS manuals has changed. Manuals will no longer be barcoded and tracked in Destiny. Teachers should keep the manual they were issued if they move between schools.

Multi-factor Authentication

Information about multi-factor authentication, including instruction sheets for the set up process and an FAQ sheet can be found at mywakeid.wcpss.net/mfa.

DLMI

This message about signing off on the DLMI was sent to principals:

The NC Digital Learning and Media Inventory (DLMI) is a mandatory state report that is completed each school year. All schools have entered the required information. As the final step in completion, the report requires that the principal sign off. Please verify that you have signed off on the DLMI. Directions can be found here (see page: https://sites.google.com/wcpss.net/library-media-services/dlmi. Questions can be directed to Stacy Symes, Digital Learning and Libraries Administrator, at ssymes@wcpss.net or 919-694-0279.

WCPSS Professional Learning Days

The district will host Professional Learning Days for all instructional staff during the 2022-2023 school year. Principals will inform their staff which professional learning day they should attend. You can view the sessions offered by Digital Learning and Libraries on the Professional Learning Days post on WakeConnect.

We encourage you to select sessions that support your WakeForward focus for your library this year.
