Enriched Reports - Circulation - This report provides a quick breakdown of the number of circulations and renewals at each grade level during a given time period. It also shows In-Library use statistics. Circulations that are recorded as (Blank) indicate staff circulations.
Circulation Report - Top Homeroom Statistics - This report can provide a snapshot into circulation by homeroom. This is most useful for elementary schools as it can help identify potential gaps in access to the library across classes or grade levels.
Circulation Report - Top Patrons - This report can provide a snapshot into which patrons have the highest circulation rates.
Collection Statistics - Summary - This report can provide a snapshot into the circulation rates of different parts of your collection. It allows you to see which areas of the collection are most popular.
Library Statistics - This report can provide a snapshot as well as give circulations for a time period. The ability to see monthly circulation may be useful.
Circulation Report - Library Patron Statistics Historical - This report can show the number of circulations for each student during a given time period. It can be helpful for identifying students who may have missed opportunities to check out books, as well as identifying trends across grade levels or classes.
Best Practices for Gathering Data ~ Secondary Libraries - Guidelines for practices that will give better data to reflect the way secondary libraries are used by more independent learners.
Edit circulation limits - Work with your MTAC to determine the appropriate circulation limits you want to set in Destiny.
Work with your MTAC to determine whether your procedures for managing overdue books and fines for lost books can be revised.
Globally clearing student fines - You can use this feature in a variety of ways to help make sure old overdues or fines don't create a barrier to students checking out books, particularly when they move schools.
Set overdue to lost - By default, Destiny is set to move overdue titles to lost status after they have been overdue for a full calendar year. You can adjust that setting to move overdue to lost more frequently, clearing student accounts periodically during the year to give them a fresh start. You can choose to not assess a fine when a copy is moved to lost status.
NOT automatically assessing a fine for lost books - This setting is automatically checked by default in Destiny. Consider updating this setting to not assess a fine for materials marked as lost.
Talking Points - Library Media Services recommends using Talking Points to send reminders about returning library books. Rather than sending overdue notices through Destiny via email, a general Talking Points message can be sent periodically reminding families to help their student check their Destiny Discover account to see which books they need to return.
Principals can manually add staff members to Talking Points who do not have classes assigned in PowerSchool as Talking Points [Invited]. These directions for manually adding a staff member are found on the WakeConnect site for Talking Points: Talking Points: Add a Staff Member
Once your principal has added you, add the TalkingPointes [Invited] app to your WakeID portal.
You can use or adapt the directions on this tip sheet to remind families to help their student monitor the books they have checked out from the library using their Destiny Discover app in their WakeID portal: Student Overdues in Discover
Self check-out - Setting up self check-out can remove barriers to access for students (they can check out books even if you're teaching), protect patron privacy, and help students be independent library users. See self check-out in action in this brief video.
Printing patron barcodes - Some librarians find it helpful to print patron barcodes and make library cards for students to scan, instead of typing their student ID. You might choose to do this as a scaffold for younger students.
Circulation is most successful when students have been provided time to practice the skills needed to use the library independently. School librarians should incorporate direct instruction of these skills into library lessons at the beginning of the school year, with review and reinforcement throughout the year as needed. These skills include:
Self check-out; self check-in
Example lesson: Learn self-checkout: Library Book Checkout Dance!
Navigating the library
Understanding the different categories of books found in the library and how shelves are organized
Understanding how to read library signs to locate books of interest
Using the library catalog to locate books of interest
Example lesson: Using destiny discover to find books
Example lesson slides: Review: Using Destiny Discover to find and check out books
