Objective: By connecting a character’s experience in a story with a hands-on experience in class, students will identify/discover elements of a design or research process. I specifically used the vocabulary of “wonder,” “investigate,” “synthesize,” and “evaluate” relating to our eWISE model, but it could easily adapt to any design process.
Summary: After reading Jabari Tries, students will work in teams to build a track where a marble will roll from the beginning into a cup at the end.

⭐Managing Device Distractions - Digital Literacy Progression
Duration: 45 minutes
Objective: Students will practice strategies for managing distractions when using a classroom device.
Summary: This lesson helps students acknowledge that everyone gets distracted sometimes when using technology. Students learn strategies for managing distractions that can help them stay focused on the application they are using for learning. Strategies include a stoplight visual cue, “quick-calm” strategies like tab checks and close-the-curtain breaths, and creating short scripts to help cue a distracted friend to focus. The lesson is anchored by a read-aloud of the picture book That Always Happens Sometimes.

⭐Being a Digital Citizen - Digital Literacy Progression

Objective: Students will be able to explain how being a good citizen of their school and community extends to being a good citizen online. They can identify ways to stay safe and be responsible when online.
Summary: This lesson combines two simple digital citizenship lessons from Common Sense Media in which students are introduced to the concepts of being safe, responsible, and respectful online. Students watch short videos with Common Sense Media characters and have the opportunity to draw pictures and create badges showing good digital citizen behaviors. Students also use a Venn diagram to sort examples of behaviors to show how many digital citizenship skills overlap with general good citizenship skills.

Objective: Students will understand what Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is, practice identifying it in real situations, and understand how to protect their own PII.
Summary: This lesson combines 2 Common Sense Media lessons that help students identify personally identifiable information and evaluate the privacy risks in different scenarios. This lesson concludes with discussion board practice in Canvas where students can share fun facts about themselves that are not PII. This lesson is a good fit for the start of the year when students are learning about their classmates.

Objective: Students will analyze how media makes them feel and why, recognize how content creators influence our emotions and choices, and identify different techniques used in media creation.
Summary: This lesson incorporates a Common Sense Media lesson in which students explore the relationship between media and emotions by identifying how content creators influence their feelings and choices through rhetorical appeals (logos, ethos, and pathos). Summary: This lesson integrates a Common Sense Media lesson and a read aloud to help students understand how to evaluate media to determine how the creator might be trying to influence them. The Common Sense Media lesson uses an advertisement as an example. The read aloud gives an example that is similar to a fitness influencer. Students are also given the opportunity to share examples of influencers they are aware of and the media they create. Students practice investigating 4 questions to help them evaluate media: Who's telling the story, and why? What's being included or left out? How is this trying to make me feel? Is this actually true? An extension activity connects this skill to students’ social studies unit about thinking like a historian.

⭐Don't Take the Bait! - Digital Literacy Progression
Duration: 30 minutes
Objective: Students will understand what clickbait is, identify common clickbait techniques used to grab our attention, and apply strategies to evaluate content before we tap or click.
Summary: Students work with a partner to read an article to help them define clickbait and explain why people use it. Then, they participate in a Common Sense Media lesson to practice identifying clickbait.
