Reading Skills

Beginning Skills:

o Point to each word while reading

o Reading sight words without hesitation

o Break apart the word into syllables (they usually have the most difficulty with one-syllable words because they try to sound them out)

o Rhyming Production (Tell me a word that rhymes with ___)

o Consonant Vowel Consonant Words (CVC or Word Families if ever googling):

o Read (jet)

o Isolation and Identification of sounds (What is the last sound in jet? /t/)

Advanced Skills

o Read a nonfiction book together. Have the student identify the main topic and key details of the text.

o Read a fiction book together. Have the student identify the characters, setting, and retell the beginning, middle, and end without looking back in the book

o CVC Manipulation

o “This is the word jet. If I want to change the word jet to the word pet, which letter do I change?”

o Reading words with:

o Digraphs

o Blends

o (Later in year) Two Vowels Walking

o (Later in year) R-Controlled Vowels

o (Later in year) Silent e

Suggested Activities:

· Read a book to your child and have them point along

· Read a book to your child and as critical thinking questions (“Why do you think…? What would happen if…?)

· Ask your child to sound out and read CVC words, words with blends/digraphs.

· Write a sentence using sight words and decodable words for your child to read and draw a picture to match
