☃️weekly newsletter - week of January 26th☃️
**Remote Learning Message**
Wake County will no longer require make up days, but students will need to complete remote work at home in order to be counted "present" for the missed days due to inclement weather. There is a choice board of activities posted on Canvas. EACH DAY, your child will log on and complete 2 reading activities and 2 math activities. They will log their work in the completion record at the bottom of the document.
Announcements:
Math Curriculum Night: Join us for Math Curriculum Night on Thursday, February 12th from 5:00-6:30 pm. We will discuss important 5th grade math skills and how they apply to real world situations. Food will be provided! RSVP using THIS LINK.
IB Action!: We’re excited to share our IB Minded Action project—cereal collection to support our community partner, Carolina Cares. We are collecting any type or brand of cereal, with a goal of 100 boxes by our 100th day of school on Wednesday, February 11th. There are collection bins throughout the building to drop off cereal.
Wake Up & Read Book Drive: The Annual WAKE Up and Read Book Drive will run January 20th - February 20th. You can drop off books in the 5th grade hallway.
Middle School Updates: On February 19th, you will receive notification of your magnet application. Please remember that Joyner does not have any control over school assignments for middle school.
LAST CALL!!! Baby Pictures Needed: The deadline for baby pictures is January 30th. Please email a baby picture of your child to jyjcounselor@gmail.com or give a hard copy to Ms. Burston to scan. (Please write your child's name on the back.)
Williamsburg Overnight Trip: If your child is participating in the Williamsburg trip, the cost is $320. We appreciate payments sooner, but the final due date is February 13th.
Chromebooks: PLEASE make sure your child brings their CHARGED device to school everyday. It is important to develop a routine for charging Chromebooks at home. Many students are not charging devices at home or forgetting the device altogether. Each classroom only has a few spare devices.
Weekly Objectives:
ELA/Social Studies: We will begin our next novel, Sophia's War by Avi. It is about a girl during the American Revolution who becomes a spy. In her role as a spy, she uncovers a secret plot and tries to stop it. We will focus on answering inferential questions using text evidence as support and determining the meaning of unknown words. We will also discuss how a narrator's perspective influences the way events are described.
NCDPI Reading At Home Resources
Vocabulary: Students will have a set of 15 vocabulary words every 2 weeks. At the end of the two weeks, they will take a quiz. **Lesson 9 quiz on January 30th**
(Click here to see word lists for each lesson)
Math: We will begin adding and subtracting decimals. Students will be able to solve problems using base ten strategies and the algorithm.
