Fourth grade students at JYJ Elementary School joyfully learn to play the recorder as part of their music special. Through this experience, they are developing as inquirers and communicators—exploring rhythm, melody, and notation while expressing their creativity. The recorder unit connects to the PYP transdisciplinary theme of How We Express Ourselves, encouraging students to appreciate music as a universal language and a form of personal and cultural expression. Working collaboratively, they reflect on their progress and celebrate the growth mindset that defines JYJ learners. A performance will take place in the spring.
Recorders are ordered through the school in the first few weeks of school. Students may also purchase their own recorder or bring a sibling's recorder from home (please see Ms Scott to ensure it is the correct type and fingering). JYJ has a limited number of instruments students may borrow for the unit.
Student will leave their recorders at school for the first few weeks of the unit and then transition to bringing them back and forth between home and school, to ensure more practice time.
