I have been teaching music since 1999. My career began in Asheville, North Carolina after graduating from UNC–Greensboro with a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Piano Performance. That same year, I had the opportunity to study two traditional West African instruments—djembe and balafon—with master musicians in Mali, an experience that deepened my love for world music, dance, and cultural traditions. I’m passionate about sharing that enthusiasm with students every day.
After earning my Master’s in Jazz Piano Performance from East Carolina University, I returned to the classroom to complete my teaching certification. I have always loved music and working with children, so teaching continues to feel like the perfect fit. My husband teaches high school English, and our family is rooted in positive, life-long learning experiences.
I am National Board Certified in Early/Middle Childhood Music and have completed training in World Music Drumming and Yamaha’s Music In Education program through the National Association for Music Education in Reston, VA.
In my classroom, I strive to teach the NC Essential Standards for Music through a blend of World Music Drumming, Kodály, and Orff approaches. These methods are hands-on, highly participatory, and build strong teamwork skills. Students learn by experiencing music—discussing, creating, singing, moving, and playing a wide variety of instruments.
I have been honored and privileged to work with some of the sweetest students and the most amazing educators in the field. In both Pitt County and Wake County Public Schools, I have experience in fundraising and receiving grants for various projects, launching Creative Arts Night, and bringing in volunteer and guest composers, choral conductors, musical artists, and taking groups to perform in the community throughout the years. I thank our families for their continued interest, involvement, and support of our music program. A caring, invested, and involved school community goes a long way in a child's life.
