The Learning Commons is structured to facilitate collaboration in support of the school's mission: "Knightdale High School of Collaborative Design will provide a relevant and engaging education and will graduate students who are collaborative, creative, effective communicators and critical thinkers." The school is currently in the midst of a five-year redesign focused on collaboration to support student growth and development. As a result, the Learning Commons provides many different areas for collaboration for groups as small as three to as large as a whole class. Teachers can book two large areas for whole-class instruction, the computer lab section and the center section, where the class can check out laptops to meet any technology needs. Groups of a dozen or so students can meet at one of two TV areas in the back, where any presentations can be displayed on the large monitors. Smaller groups of up to eight can meet at tables or in soft seating sections throughout the library. The smallest groups of two or three often like to use the high-top tables near the windows. Beyond these collaborative spaces, we also feature a makerspace to encourage hands-on learning; a studio where students can record music, podcasts, public service announcements, and videos using the greenscreen; and the Room of Requirement, which is a conference room that can be used for quiet student, group work, or to meet other needs.
To encourage equitable access and meet the needs of our students, we have extended hours four days a week. My partner librarian, Kristel, opens the library at 6:45 (classes begin at 7:25) Monday through Friday, and I keep the library open until 4:00 (classes end at 2:18) Monday through Thursday. We are also open during lunch, allowing students to eat and conduct research at the same time. We maintain a website where we provide links to research tools including databases and citation builders, and we have recently implemented Ask a Librarian tools including a Google Form and a chat box. Our goal is to be available to support student learning whenever possible.
