While we place a large book order at the beginning of the year, we also maintain a subscription to the Junior Library Guild. This book collection subscription service gives us a unique opportunity to add newly published, high-quality, in-demand books to our collection every month. We have based our choices on the high-interest areas for our students as well as our goal to build a diverse collection representing the developmental, cultural, social, and linguistic needs of our students. As evidenced by surveys, circulation statistics, and conversations, our students are interested in sports, graphic novels, realistic fiction, and thrillers. Our categories for this year are listed below, as well as a selection of a few recent acquisitions through the Junior Library Guild shipments.
The Junior Library Guild is associated with significant voices in the world of libraries and publishing, including The Horn Book, Library Journal, and School Library Journal. I read these publications every month and follow them and others concerned with quality publishing in children's, young adult, and adult literature on platforms like Twitter. Keeping up-to-date with publications is a fun but challenging job, and the Junior Library Guild always offers quality books that are in line with recommendations from various sources. It also offers us a chance to review the upcoming selections and make adjustments if we choose, which is a great feature in terms of collection development. However, we find we rarely have to make any changes, as the books they send are fantastic for our students.
The category selection for our Junior Library Guild subscription was based on our students' interests and has proven successful. With every Junior Library Guild shipment, at least 2-3 books are checked out within the first week, and the others typically circulate well. All are quality publications that I am happy to add to the collection.
