As part of the Digital Portfolio Initiative, we worked with all of the freshmen through their mandatory Empowerment classes. These classes focus on the future: career, college, goals, interests, so they are perfect fits for beginning a digital portfolio. Initially, we used text almost exclusively for our instructions, but we soon learned that there were a number of English language learners who struggled with the amount of text on these sheets. After meeting with two of our English as a Second Language teachers, I adjusted these materials to use pictures for guidance, as the ESL teachers indicated this was more helpful and preferable to providing a translation into the students' first languages. Once we provided students with the adjusted instructions, they were much more comfortable and were able to participate fully in the lessons.
