As a media specialist, I am always looking for ways to make difficult or "boring" topics more active and interesting ... enter digital breakouts!
When English teachers approached us for a lesson on plagiarism, my partner librarian and I put together a digital breakout to keep students engaged as they learned. The breakout on plagiarism followed a girl named Jessalyn as she attempted to create a digital portfolio that contained information she had gathered in legal, ethical ways. The breakout covered the WCPSS research model (eWISE), how to evaluate resources for quality, how to cite sources in different styles, and how to make sure pictures were obtained legally. We also incorporated different activities, such as digital jigsaw puzzles and a Quizizz, to help keep students on their toes.
