During Computer Science Week, the Learning Commons hosted a range of stations for students at all levels of coding ability. The overall goal was to introduce students to careers in computer science and help them see how workers in these fields are involved in everything from making movies to running hospitals. Additionally, we wanted students to see how they can learn to program. The stations ranged from offline activities, such as analog coding using cups or coloring by pixels, to learning to mix music or to program robots like Dash. At each station, students found printed instruction cards, links to video tutorials and, when necessary, personalized assistance from me, my partner librarian, our instructional technology facilitator, or a Library Media Studies student. Students who visited the Learning Commons on their own or with a teacher had a blast and learned a lot about the world of coding. I enjoyed getting to see their excitement and working with them in small groups.
