SOS lessons aims:
* To help students understand that depression is a treatable illness.
* To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression.
* To train students in how to identify serious depression and potential suicidal thoughts in a friend.
* To impress upon teens that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns.

As part of our commitment to student safety and well-being, all middle and high schools in the Wake County Public School System are required to show the Protecting Our Students videos to students in grades 6–12 during the school year. A state law passed in 2023 requires that all public school students in grades 6–12 view these videos.
These age-appropriate videos were developed by the Center for Safer Schools in collaboration with Capitol Broadcasting Company. They are designed to educate students about inappropriate behavior and adult misconduct in school settings, help students learn skills to stay safe, and identify trusted adults they can turn to for help. Our goal is to empower students with knowledge while approaching this important and sensitive topic with care and respect.
