The vision of the Hilburn Academy comprehensive school counseling program is that all students are responsible, caring, and resilient leaders who strive to do their best every day. All Hilburn students are prepared to reach their full potential, graduate on time and lead productive lives in a complex and changing world.
The role of school counselors has evolved in recent years and may be very different from what many of us experienced growing up. According to ASCA (the American School Counselor Association), a school counseling program is "comprehensive in scope, preventative in design, and developmental in nature". Our comprehensive school counseling program is designed to improve student achievement and enhance the academic, career and personal/social development of ALL students. It is data driven, with the goal of spending 80% of our time in direct service to students by providing classroom guidance, small group counseling, individual counseling, and consultation services. We collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators and other school staff to promote student growth and success, and we serve as leaders in our school.
Classroom counseling is a preventative approach which allows us to focus on developmental topics and skill building. Lessons build upon individual strengths as students learn specific skills, strategies, and values that will assist them in their academic, personal/social, and career development. Lessons are provided once/month for grades K-5, and quarterly for our middle grades.
Parents, teachers, and students can request individual counseling services, which are solution-focused and short-term in nature. Please understand confidentiality is an inherent part of the counseling relationship and vital to a trusting partnership. We encourage students to share with parents and will always contact parents/guardians if we are concerned about a student’s safety.
Small group counseling provides a supportive environment where students can learn new skills and explore topics with their peers. Groups run throughout the year and are offered based on school need, teacher request, or parent request. Permission from a parent/guardian is required, so parents/guardians will always be notified. Topics may include friendship skills, impulse control, school success skills, changing families, and more.
We work collaboratively with parents, staff, and community partners to support student growth and success and are available for consultation. Please email or call to schedule an appointment.
