Thursday, 2/27/20

1. Prepare for discussion/mid unit 1 assessment. Students will summarize and use text evidence to discuss: Plessy v. Ferguson, the Dissenting Opinion, 13th and 14th Amendment. This discussion will be a major grade.

HOMEWORK: Be sure summary and text evidence are ready for you to share with your small group and larger group tomorrow. Begin reading chapter 5 in A Mighty Long Way and complete p. 45 in the workbook. This chapter and workbook page must be completed by Tuesday, 3/3.


Friday , 2/28/20

1. Small group and large group discussion for mid unit 1 assessment. Students will share their summaries an text evidence in discussions with other classmates. These groups will be no larger than 8 students.

HOMEWORK: Read and complete p. 42 "Introduction to Jim Crow Laws." Read chapter 5 of A Mighty Long Way by Tuesday, 3/3 and complete p. 45 in the workbook.

Thursday, 2/6

Classwork:

  1. Review worksheet from homework to create a character confessional. Your confessional will be written in first person, must contain 3 pieces of direct text evidence and answer the three questions stated on the worksheet. You can focus on a specific scene or create a piece of writing that summarizes this character's entire experience. You can create:
      • Two voice poem
      • monologue
      • diary entry
      • letter
      • newspaper article (if you prefer to not do the first person narrative)
      • narrative poem
      • song
      • Do you have another idea? Let's try it.

HOMEWORK: Revise your character confessional for presentation in class tomorrow. Have your copy of A Midsummer Night's Dream to turn in on Friday. Any books that are damaged or lost, need to be replaced.

Friday, 2/7

Classwork: No School. Character confessionals, workbooks and plays will be collected on Monday 2/10.

  1. Do read aloud of your character confessional, get feedback from your small group.
  2. Do a presentation of your character confessional in a larger group.
  3. The best of each group will share with the whole class.
  4. Turn in your copy of the play, your confessional, your worksheet and your rubric.

HOMEWORK: If you book hasn't been turned in on Friday, it must be turned in Monday. New books issued for Module 3 issued on Monday.

Monday 1/27/20 End of Second Quarter and First Semester

Classwork:

    1. Review body paragraph graphic organizers on p. 104 and 105. Take any questions and ensure all expectations are met.
    2. Essay talk through. Students will meet with a partner to talk over their two body paragraphs and discuss their counterargument. We are trying to focus on how someone could disagree with the writer's argument. This conversation will help us write the counterargument and find text evidence to acknowledge the other side to make our argument stronger and more persuasive.
    3. Writing the counterclaim on p. 106.

HW: Complete counterclaim on page 106 in the workbook.

Tuesday 1/28/20

Classwork:

    1. Review counterclaim and take questions about this integral portion of the essay.
    2. Review student example of the introduction and conclusion. Examine what is included and requirements for these two paragraphs that start and end this essay.
    3. Complete introduction and conclusion on p.103 and 107.

HW: Complete all of graphic organizer p. 103-107. Review all elements of this graphic organizer to ensure that you are ready to type a draft on Thursday in class.

Wednesday 1/29/20 Teacher Workday

Classwork:

    1. Type first draft of argumentative paper.
    2. Begin argumentative paper peer edit. Peer edit sheet can be found below.

    1. Reading and analysis of student model essay. Read aloud.
    2. Work with partner to complete graphic organizer on p. 88 and 89.

HW: Complete quick write on p. 90. List 5 elements you must include in this essay.

Wednesday, 1/22

Classwork:

  1. Review homework and create an anchor chart to set goals for this essay.
  2. Complete graphic organizer on p. 88 and 89.
  3. Review prompt on p. 91
  4. Evidence of Control Note Catcher review. After we understand the prompt, we hunt and search through this note catcher to find the strongest text evidence for our writing.

HOMEWORK: Review text evidence from today. Sift through all text evidence to set up the framework for your essay on p. 92. Bring books to return or renew during our Media Center visit tomorrow.

Thursday, 1/23

Classwork:

    1. Review rubric with a small group.
    2. Create a chart with your small group that uses student- friendly language for standards and focus for this essay.
    3. Craft a 'quote sandwich' using text evidence.

HW: Complete one quote sandwich that you can use as your text evidence in your essay. Peer edit/ peer critique of quote sandwich will be tomorrow.

Friday, 1/24

Classwork:

1. Peer critique of your quote sandwich.

2. Review writing improvement tracker that we completed after your last essay.

3. Work on body paragraphs 1 and 2. This is text evidence that supports your main claim.

HOMEWORK: Complete both body paragraphs in the graphic organizers on p. 104 and 105.

    3. Analyze narrative structure of "Pyramus and Thisbe" in a plot diagram on p. 80.
    4. Write a six sentence summary based on the plot diagram.

3. Check your citations in your Works Cited section of the essay. Check the student model on p. 61 and 62 to be sure you have completed them correctly.

4. Use the rubric to be sure your essay exceeds expectations.

5. Share your final your final copy. Be sure you type "Final Copy" on the top of your paper. Tear out the rubric on pages 71 and 72, be sure your peer edit is with those pages, staple them together, and turn those in to Mrs. Goldman.

  3. Have first draft checked by Mrs. Goldman, then get a chrome book and start typing.

  3. Begin podcast of reading on p. 34-40 in workbook. "Forgotten Ship..." This reading is the basis for your assessment tomorrow. The assessment is multiple choice and a short writing. This assessment is a major grade.

What connections do you see between Ha's situation and the information you have read? Share this information with a partner and add one piece of text evidence from your partner that you didn't have. Hold on to this card, as you have QW#2. These cards will be collected after we complete Quick Write #4 tomorrow.

Classwork:

  1. Review Mid Unit Assessment
  2. Complete quick write #3 p. 18 on an index card. Be sure to write a complete sentence for the focus statement. We will create a table for 3 pieces of text evidence and explanation. A complete sentence for a concluding sentence.
  3. Review pages 20-41 in Inside Out and Back Again. Discuss the developing conflict for Ha.
  4. Review Quick Write #4 prompt on p. 20. What decision is Ha's family trying to make? Is this decision challenging for them? Gather your text evidence.

HOMEWORK: Review pages 42-47 of Inside Out and Back Again. Find text evidence for Quick Write #4 tomorrow. Quick writes 2,3 and 4 will be collected tomorrow.

  3. Non-fiction reading in workbook. P. 8 "Chinese Dragon." Mrs. Goldman to model taking a gist from each paragraph. Work together for questions on p. 13 and 14 that connect to "Chinese Dragon."
  4. Jigsaw activity for next pages (p. 9-10 and 11- reading) and text dependent questions (p. 15-17)that follow.

HOMEWORK: Re-read and revisit p. 8. Be sure you are clear about how to do a gist for each paragraph of non-fiction reading. Tomorrow you will work on a non-fiction reading and text dependent questions.

  5. Discuss what close readers do...effective reading.

HOMEWORK: Read pages 4-9 in Inside Out and Back Again. Take three column notes on this reading. Column 1 is a quote from the text, column 2 is page #, column 3 is inference or why this quote is important. These notes will be used for text evidence for writing...there will be lots of writing.

Tuesday, 8/27

  1. Complete discussion on close reading.
  2. Review essential or guiding questions.
  3. Review p. 4-9 in the text and review notes with use of text evidence from this novel.
  4. Look at mode of quick write #1. Discuss use of basic grammar and mechanics and expectations for quick write #1 on Wednesday.
