WHAT ARE THE SPEECH EVENTS?
Declamation (9th & 10th grade ONLY)
Students deliver a memorized speech originally given by another person, aiming to convey the original speaker's message with clarity and emotion.
Extemporaneous Speaking
Competitors have 30 minutes to prepare a 7-minute speech responding to a current events question, showcasing analysis, organization, and delivery.
Impromptu Speaking
Participants are given a prompt and have seven minutes total to prepare and deliver a speech, testing their ability to organize and articulate ideas quickly.
Informative Speaking
Students craft and present a 10-minute original speech to inform the audience on a topic, often incorporating visual aids to enhance understanding.
Original Oratory
Competitors write and deliver a 10-minute persuasive speech on a topic of their choice, employing evidence and logic to support their viewpoint.
Dramatic Interpretation
A solo performance of a published dramatic work, where the student conveys emotion and character through voice and movement without props or costumes.
Duo Interpretation
Two performers interpret a published piece together, focusing on character interaction and timing, without making eye contact or physical contact with each other.
Oral Interpretation
Students present a selection of prose or poetry, using vocal expression and limited gestures to bring the literature to life, typically with a manuscript in hand.
Program Oral Interpretation (POI)
A performance that combines prose, poetry, and drama centered around a cohesive theme, allowing students to explore complex topics through multiple literary forms.
