Whether you are new to Speech and Debate or you are a veteran parent judge, we are glad you are here.
The GLHS Speech and Debate Team is successful in part because of the incredible parents who support us. We rely on parents to serve as judges and chaperones at each tournament. Please read on to find out more ways you can help the team...and thank you!
Judges
The recording below is of a training offered by Apex Friendship High School's coach, Kim Eckstein, for their team last year! Please disregard any team announcements regarding AFHS - all GLHS team info is housed on this website.
-> Feel free to skip to the section where she starts talking about judging the events.
There are steep fees if we do not meet our judge requirements, so students who do not bring a judge are not guaranteed a spot! We will work with students on an individual basis in cases where parents cannot attend, but we strongly encourage students to recruit other adults in their lives (family or family friends) to help us meet our judge requirements.
Students who have not found a judge should not wait to register for a tournament, and can notify the leadership team if they have found a judge after registering.
We do not have the means to pay the fees when we don't have enough judges, and we really don't want to have to drop competitors for a lack of judges.
All judges must apply to become a Wake County-approved volunteer. This is a quick background check process andcan be found at the Wake County Volunteer Registration link below.
