2025 - 2026
September-October:
Math: We began the year talking about the 8 Standards of Mathematical Practices. That discussion will form the building blocks of what we do in math. Our first challenge was using structure and patterns to figure out how many steps a number needs to become a palindrome. Next we worked on a 9 digit math challenge where students were using only the numbers 1-9 to create a 3 digit number + another three digit number equals another three digit number. Using the ideas of multiplication students will work on solving the locker riddle and later use their knowledge of area and perimeter to compare houses or construct a zoo.
Reading: We began working on researching the great horned owl who will be one of the stars of the book we are going to be reading titled, Poppy by Avi. Students will be asked to analyze characters, define words, answer questions using evidence from the text, and compare different reading selections. Below is a list of literature selections that we will be using this year. Please note that it will be updated as the year progresses.
