2025 - 2026
December:
Math:
The 3rd Grade scholars have continued their work with data in a project called 'Dice in A Corner'. Dice had to be stacked in a certain way and examining the numbers on the dice faces, students used all 4 operations to find given numbers.
We had such fun working with a real world problem based learning project called, 'Energy Bites'. Students began with a recipe, researched prices for ingredients, calculated the cost for making a batch and then figure out how to sell them for a profit. Many students enjoyed making the recipe at home and said they were delicious!. If you want to give it a go, use this link to get to the recipe we worked with for our little project.
November:
Math:
The 3rd Graders are data masters after using real life research about wild cats' weights and sizes to create and interpret data tables. Students made line graphs and bar graphs to show their findings.
October:
Math:
Students have enjoyed their exploration in the concept of solving for unknown numbers, aka Algebra. We have worked on using strategies to solve basic Algebraic equations. This was then connected to using the skill to identify missing numbers for ordered pairs and plotting points on a coordinated grid. The students also enjoyed a virtual algebra challenge as they figured out the value of various shapes on a scale. Our study of Algebra was wrapped up by solving very challenging Algebra riddles in which students worked together to determine the value for various symbols and then using those values to solve an equation.
September:
Math: PBL: My Math Auto Biography: Students demonstrated their understanding of arrays by folding a piece of paper into a 3x3 array. Next, each student thinks of a number that represents them in some way and adds one number to each box in their array (9 numbers total). These numbers could be their birthday, amount of items in a specific collection (like hair scrunchies), house number, plane rides, etc. Students are encouraged to choose numbers that are unique to them and represent a their personality, interests and experiences. Finally, students are asked to create a multi-step word problem using all of their numbers and all 4 math operations, or to use their prior knowledge of math concepts to represent their numbers through a design on graph paper. This could be a graph, multiple arrays, or scene using area and perimeter.
Reading: We are exploring folktales while learning about literary elements such as key words, ideas, feelings, symbols/images. Students completed a complicated vocabulary analysis using the story Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plains. Etymology which is the study of word origins along with analyzing a word's components will also be a focus. Answering questions while using text evidence will be a skill we practice often. Throughout the year we are going to be reading many different types of literature. The document below lists all of the titles. It will be updated as needed.
