"Valuing teacher time is essential for outreach mechanisms to work. For many year, we have suggested that family engagement is not about doing more; it's about doing what we already do...just differently." Dr. Steve Constantino, Engage Every Family.

An idea: Change up the structure of weekly folders. 1/2 of the folder can include work that has already been completed, which is the traditional model. The other 1/2 should include information about how families can support work that is about to happen in the following week. Also, instead of requiring a signature, provide families with a question to ask their child and have them write down the answer. Teachers still get the confirmation they need, but in a much more meaningful way. This structure also allows families to have more power in the process of their child's learning, since they can be more proactive rather than only reactive.
