What are we learning?

What are we learning in music?

Through Essential Standards, students learn how to respond to music, create music, read music, and understand the relationship between music and the world they live.

"The Essential Standards communicate what students should know and be able to do as a result of instruction at each grade level (K-8) or proficiency level: beginning, intermediate, proficient, and advanced (9-12). Because of the broad base of knowledge and skills involved in creating, performing, responding to, and understanding the arts, experiences and learning must occur in a sequential manner."- NC Department of Public Instruction

GRADING

Wake County Schools employs Standards Based Grading in Music.  Students receive a content grade at the end of each semester.  The content grade is a reflection of the growth and development of students as they participate in the elementary music instructional program.  The content grade uses the rating scale of:

Level 4: Student consistently performs independently the Music Goal(s) identified, integrates personal experience and involves critical judgements.

Level 3: Student demonstrates continually improving knowledge and skills to show independent mastery of Music Goal(s).

Level 2: Student is inconsistent in demonstration of knowledge and skills to show mastery of identified Music Goal(s).

Level 1: Student is unable to exhibit knowledge and skills to show mastery of identified Music Goal(s).
