Beginning Orchestra
Beginning String Orchestra is open to all students. This class is designed to teach performance, basic care, and proper upkeep of the violin, viola, cello or double bass to students with little or no previous playing experience. Students in this course will learn basic skills for playing an instrument with good posture, technique, and proper rehearsal/concert etiquette. They will also learn music theory concepts such as reading and interpreting standard notation, musical symbols, vocabulary in the category of dynamics, tempo and articulation, as well as basic music history and analysis. Students will practice and perform pieces specifically composed for their level of achievement. During the school year students are required to practice at home daily and to attend two evening performances.
Intermediate Orchestra
Open to all students who have a minimum of one year of playing experience on violin, viola, cello or bass. This class builds on the knowledge and skills learned in the first year and challenges the students with higher level performance skills. In addition to the basic concepts covered in Beginning Orchestra, other music concepts will be developed. These music concepts include the following: development of better intonation, intermediate bowing skills, exploration of alternate fingerings, intermediate level time and key signature, complex rhythm, and more music vocabulary in the category of dynamics, tempo and articulations. A wide variety of music will be explored. Also, students will study music theory, history, and ear training. During the school year students are required to practice at home daily and to attend all after school rehearsals and evening performances.
Advanced Orchestra
This is the most advanced orchestra at Dillard Drive Middle School. The class is open to students who have sufficient training and a high level of technical proficiency. Entrance to this orchestra is by audition only. The purpose of this orchestra is to demonstrate the highest levels of musicianship through performance of diverse selections of orchestra literature. During the school year students are required to practice at home daily and to attend all after school rehearsals and performances.
7th and 8th Music Exploratory (Guitar)
This class is a one semester introduction to the guitar. Students do not need any experience to take the course. However, students who already play another instrument can use this to expand their horizons and learn to play the guitar. Since the course is designed to accommodate beginners no performances will be required. It is recommended that students rent or purchase a guitar so that they can practice at home. They do not need to bring an instrument to school. A school guitar will be assigned to them for use during class. 7th and 8th World Percussion
Every culture in the world has produced music. Each of those types of music have signature rhythms at their very heart. this semester long course will introduce students to sounds, percussion instruments and rhythms from around the world. Students will learn hand and stick drumming in a fun and engaging curriculum designed to get them on stage and out in the community.
