The Davis Drive ES MTAC has a strong history. It was already a thriving committee when Stephanie Fiedler joined the school as Media Coordinator in March 2017. Traditionally, the committee was co-chaired by the Media and Technology Coordinators and made up of representatives of every grade level, all subject areas, special education, administration, and parents. In the 2018-19 school year, however, all school-wide committees merged with the School Improvement Committee subcommittees. As a result, MTAC merged with the SIC's Curriculum and Instruction subcommittee which met on a monthly basis. For the 2019-20 school year, school leadership decided to once again have MTAC as a separate committee. The MTAC intends to meet on a monthly basis according to the school's committee calendar.
Beginning in 2017-18, the MTAC began a five-year plan to overhaul the print collection. Based on a collection analysis report from Mackin, we decided to break the collection into five parts and weed and feed those sections over the course of five years using school funds:
2017-18 - Nonfiction sections 500-550s, 600s, and 900s
2018-19 - Nonfiction sections 400s, 560-590s, and 700s
2019-20 - Nonfiction sections 000s, 100s, 200s, and 300s
2020-21 - Biography (A-L) and nonfiction section 800s
2021-22 - Biography (M-Z) and any other sections, as necessary
Using our generous PTA budget (e.g., $3,000 in 2017-18), we are continuously adding to our fiction and picture books sections. In 2019, Drs. Bovenizer & Baker, orthodontists who serve the local community, committed to donating $10,000 to add to the media center collection over the next five years.
Throughout the school year, the committee discusses and makes decisions on issues such as budget, equitable distribution of technology resources, and plans for technology professional development. We have a school-wide goal of 100% of faculty becoming Google-certified by 2020. We are lucky to have two Google-certified trainers on staff, Cori Odom and Amy Fenton, who are leading Tech Tuesdays professional development to support the faculty towards this goal.
"WakeForward is a new initiative of support for school library advocacy and professional learning. It allows schools to reflect upon key areas that make up a strong school library program.," ~WCPSS ITLMS
The WCPSS WakeForward initiative began in August 2018. Our MTAC used its assessment tool to determine our areas of strength and areas of improvement to formulate our goals. Based on the assessment results, we determined that our two areas of focus on during the 2018-19 school year would be Data & Privacy and Professional Learning, specifically Copyright & Fair Use.
