Differentiated Education Plan (DEP)
AIG Scholars at East Cary Magnet Middle School have an annual Differentiated Education Plan (DEP) based on their individual Student Profiles (ISP). Parents/Guardians receive these documents each year with a description of service delivery options as described by Wake County. AIG identification carries over from elementary to middle school within WCPSS.
Differentiated Curriculum and Instructional Practices
Cluster Grouping Within A Class: AIG scholars are cluster-grouped and scheduled into classes for Language Arts and Math. A cluster is defined as a group of 5-20 AIG identified students who are served in a regular classroom setting. Additionally, students identified in the area of Mathematics are differentiated through their math course selection now that they are learning at the Middle School Level.
In-Class Flexible Grouping: Teachers may group AIG scholars together or with other scholars depending on the requirements of the task.
Service Delivery Methods
Consultation/Collaboration
The AIG teacher collaborates and consults with teachers to create differentiated assignments for their scholars which may be in the form of homework assignments, projects, reading choices, and leveled instructional practice in the classroom. The AIG teacher coteaches with the classroom teachers as appropriate.
Asynchronous Instruction
Optional enrichment opportunities are posted in Canvas and available in core classrooms. Scholars may choose tasks based on interest and content; teachers may direct scholars towards these assignments. Tasks are designed to augment classroom instruction and encourage critical thinking and creativity.
School Based Enrichment
Global Scholars Time
At ECMMS scholars are pulled during Global Scholars Time for enrichment in either reading, math or focused Global Competency time. Tasks are aligned with the objectives currently taught in the classroom and complex thinking skills and our Global Competence and World Languages Magnet theme.
Students will begin attending focused reading sessions in December with the ECMMS book club called Wild Readers book club.
CogSci Cafe
Each morning from 7:45-8:15 the Cognitive Science Cafe will be open in Room 328 for scholars who choose to attend. In this space and with the teacher's support, scholars will use the Engineering Design Process to
Choose a topic,
Design an inquiry question,
Design and implement a plan for researching their question,
Reflect on their learning process, and
Present their learning in some appropriate manner.
