NC.3.MD.3 - Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step "how many more" and "how many less" problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs.
What Will Students Be Investigating?
Why do people collect data?
How can data be organized in a way that is is easy to understand/interpret?
Look in newspapers or magazines to find examples of bar graphs and picture graphs. Discuss the scale on the graph, the symbols that are used, the labels, etc. Ask your child questions about the information in the graphs: "The key shows that this smiley face stands for 10 people. How could 5 people be represented?"
Make family graphs of information (shoe sizes, heights, arm spans, etc.). Have your child create questions that can be answered using the data on the graph.
