Testing for AIG generally involves the CogAT and the Iowa Assessments. The CogAT is given to all students WCPSS during their third grade year as a universal screening measure for the gifted program. The Iowa assessment is given to third grade students who meet the threshold on the CogAT exam to qualify for further testing. Parents may also request that the School Based Committee for Gifted Education (SBCGE) consider giving the CogAT and Iowa assessments to their 4th or 5th grade students. The SBCGE will review the student's data and determine if testing for AIG would be appropriate.
Students who meet the criteria for AIG identification receive a Differentiated Education Plan (DEP). The DEP is reviewed and amended as needed during the academic year. Differentiated Course Plans (DCPs) are written yearly highlighting AIG program goals, content, and evaluation for each student. DCPs are amended as needed during the academic year. Parents can request a meeting to discuss any recommended change in service level that is made by the School Based Committee for Gifted Education.
Students who show academic strengths, but who do not qualify for AIG identification, may be placed in the Talent Development program. These students will receive services in reading and math along with the AIG identified students, but they will not receive a DEP.
