4.MD. 3 Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
Vocabulary: area, perimeter, dimensions, scaled drawing, length, width, square units, rectilinear figure/shape
This standard calls for students to apply the formula for area to rectangles. This is the first time students are asked to do this.
area = length x width
Students are asked to apply formulas for perimeter. They are expected to flexibly apply the formulas for perimeter based on the shape. Some of the formulas are:
P = 2 x length + 2 x width
P = 2 x (length + width)
Students use problem solving skills in order to distinguish between area and perimeter problems. They must know when to apply each formula.
Students will also be challenged to solve multi-step problems involving area and perimeter.
