Carnage Magnet Middle School
Magnet Beginning Piano
Beginning piano is a quarter-long class for any student with a desire to learn to play piano. There is no prerequisite for this class. Using an assigned method book, students will learn to read the musical staff in treble and bass clefs and become familiar with important music terminology. Students will also learn basic rhythmic notation utilizing whole, dotted half, half, dotted quarter, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes and rests in meters of 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4. Students will learn to match the letter names of the piano keys with the staff and will learn five finger patterns in the keys of C Major and G Major. Students will play melodies in C and G position. Beginning students should be prepared to work independently as well as with group instruction. Students will learn at their own pace with guidance from the instructor. Students can expect to perform for their classmates on a regular basis, learning proper performance etiquette as well as audience etiquette. Students will participate in an end-of-quarter virtual piano recital.
Magnet Intermediate Piano (II)
Students must meet prerequisite requirements in order to register for Piano II. Piano II is a semester-long class for students who have successfully completed Piano I or who have taken at least two years of private piano instruction and received a recommendation for the class from the Carnage Piano Instructor. Recommendations are based on student auditions. Students will continue to progress through the required method book(s) until there is a need for supplemental piano literature. Students will continue to learn at their own pace with guidance from the instructor and can expect to perform for their classmates on a regular basis. Students will participate in an in-person piano recital at the end of each semester.
Magnet Advanced Piano (III)
Students must meet prerequisite requirements in order to register for Piano III. Piano III is a semester-long class for students who have successfully completed Piano II and/or received a recommendation for the class from the Carnage Piano Instructor. Recommendations are based on student auditions. Students will continue to progress through more challenging musical literature and expand on technical studies and music theory knowledge. Students will continue to learn at their own pace with guidance from the instructor and can expect to perform for their classmates on a regular basis. Students will participate in an in-person piano recital at the end of each semester.
