MAGNET SCHOOLS OF AMERICA AWARDS

Broughton is proud and honored to have received two national awards at the Magnet Schools of America 2024 Conference.  We received an award as a Top Magnet School of Excellence in addition to Demonstration-Level Magnet Certification.  Both of these awards, granted at the highest level, are in acknowledgement of Broughton's commitment to diverseity, innovative curriculum, academic achievement, high quality leadership, and family and community partnerships. Congratulations to Broughton students, staff, families, and community partners for earning these fantastic achievements!

EARTH WEEK

Broughton is honoring our planet with multiple guest speakers, a tree planting, a film viewing, and arts festival, and more.  The April 27 Arts Festival will take place on the front lawn and is open to the public from 11 AM-3 PM.  Please join us!

QUEEN OF HEARTS

The Broughton Queen of Hearts is a play written and performed by the senior class, a talent show, a fundraiser for charity, and a formal dance. This tradition began in the 1930s and has raised funds for charitable organizations since 1941. Shown here are several photos from our exceptional 2024 Queen of Hearts performance. BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATIONS

Broughton is excited to celebrate Black History Month with a wide range of opportunities to honor the contributions of African Americans to art, history, culture, education, cuisine, and so many other aspects of the American experience. We are grateful to the Distinct Youth Club and to Ms. Closs for their vision and leadership!

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!

Broughton students are celebrating Chinese New Year by sharing languages, cultures, games, and treats. Thanks to our Mandarin teachers and students for providing this great opportunity for students to learn and have fun!

DR. TAYLOR'S FIRST 100 DAYS

Broughton was honored to host Dr. Taylor's Community Report following his first 100 days as Superintendent of the Wake County School System. During the report, Dr. Taylor provided an overview of the lessons he learned about the school district and his vision for ensuring that Wake becomes the national leader for educational innovation. IB Diploma Information Sessions

Broughton Graduate's Work in Rwanda

BROUGHTON INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

Congratulations and thanks to our wonderful students who created a fabulous Broughton International Festival in October of 2023! Our students created cultural displays from their diverse countries, shared food, participated in a fashion show, and provided numerous artistic performances!

HOMECOMING 2023

Broughton celebrated a great homecoming in October 2023 through spirit days, a pep rally, parade through the Village District, and winning football game. Congratulations, Caps!

BROUGHTON IS RE-CERTIFIED AS A MAGNET SCHOOLS OF AMERICA DEMONSTRATION-LEVEL SCHOOL!

Broughton is proud to announce that it has been re-certified by the Magnet Schools of America as a Nationally Certified Demonstration-Level School, providing high-quality, innovative educational options to families and students in order to promote choice, diversity, and academic excellence.  Demonstration-Level certification is the highest certification status granted by the Magnet Schools of America, and it is reserved for a small number of exceptional magnet schools in the nation.  This award is granted through a rigorous and comprehensive review of hundreds of artifacts and narratives that demonstrate school operations, leadership, programming, curriculum, student achievement, diversity, staffing, student recruitment, budget, and more.  Congratulations to the whole Broughton community for achieving this tremendous honor!

BROUGHTON SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM

Congratulations to the Broughton Class of 2023 for completing 31,326 hours of service in our community during their time at Broughton! Broughton is the only public school in North Carolina that has a graduation requirement of 25 hours of service learning each year, although this requirement was waived during the pandemic. Out of the entire Broughton graduating class of nearly 500 students, only one student did not complete the requirement. The Broughton service learning program teaches skills of citizenship, collaboration, creative problem-solving, time management, and communication--all while students live the Broughton Vision of "sharing their talents to improve the world."  Please visit this site for more information.

WAKE COUNTY IB DIVERSITY CONFERENCE

Thank you to the Wake County Public Schools Magnet and Equity Affairs Offices for supporting the first IB student conference, which joined students from the 5 WPCSS IB Diploma Programmes to make recommendations for encouraging underrepresented students to enrol in advanced academic program opportunities. Thanks also to the NC Museum of Art for hosting us!

UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

A central component of the Broughton magnet theme is for students to study, analyze, connect with, and take action in relation to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals for global progress. In the photo here, you will find student political cartoons from World History courses that each connected the UN SDGs to an aspect of the World History curriculum topics.

BHS-EMBASSY OF SPAIN CONNECTIONS

Thank you to Secretary of Education Ferrar and Assistant Secretary Del Mar from the Spanish Embassy in Washington for being guest speakers in our Immersion, IB, and Heritage Spanish classes! Our students learned a great deal about Spain, and they thoroughly enjoyed sharing cultures. Thanks also for working with our school staff in developing new opportunities for our students to learn about and experience Spanish language and culture.

GOOD HEALTH AND WELLBEING

As a component of the Broughton global magnet theme, each month, students focus on a different United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) in their courses. Our November focus was the SDG Good Health and Wellbeing, which we considered from the personal to the global levels. Here, you can view some of the posters students created to encourage a more healthy lifestyle and general wellbeing.

WORLD CUP

To coordinate with the global world cup, all Broughton World Languages classes studied about global sports, and they created their own World Cup tournament, with each class representing a country they study through their language courses. In addition to playing soccer, the students created songs and cheers (in the target language of study) for their team.

BETHANIE DREW--NC FOREIGN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION TEACHER OF THE YEAR!!

Congratulations to fabulous Broughton teacher Bethanie Drew for being named state teacher of the year by the NC Foreign Language Association! Ms. Drew teaches IB Spanish, AP Spanish, and Spanish IV Honors. She inspires students to develop their Spanish language skills while building deep connections and serving their community. She additionally leads by creating Spanish curriculum for the school, district, and state. Thanks, Ms. Drew, for your great work!

THANKS TO WORLD VIEW FROM UNC!!

Thank you to Ms. LaMonica and Dr. Chowa from UNC Chapel Hill for leading our whole faculty in professional development on the integration of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into all grade levels and curriculum areas!  This was an exceptional opportunity for us to reflect on our teaching practices and determine many new ways of helping our students to make global connections.

CAPS CAMP

We were very excited to take over 150 students to Camp Kanata for the weekend to engage in leadership development experiences, boundary breaking conversations, and lots of fun!  Caps Camp is a unique Broughton experience that is open to all students to participate, and it is a great way for students to make friends and build connections.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

We are excited to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with an ongoing focus on the diverse Hispanic and Latinx cultures represented in our school and community! Our celebrations built toward the Broughton International Festival, which included music, games, a fashion show, and cultural displays to represent Broughton's international community.

CONGRATULATIONS TO EDWIN DAVIS, WCPSS EMPLOYEE EXCELLENCE AWARD RECIPIENT!!

Congratulations to Edwin Davis, recipient of the September 2022 WCPSS Employee Excellence Award!  Mr. Davis teaches Forensic Science and Biology by engaging students in continual hands-on laboratory experiences using high-tech tools.  His students develop deep understandings of science topics and  become prepared for multiple STEM fields. 

BROUGHTON MOCK TRAIL TEAM--CHAMPIONS!

Congratulations to the Broughton Mock Trial team for  being the NC state champions! Then, at the national championship, they placed 11th in the country! 

CAROLINE OLSON--WAKE COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR!

Congratulations to Ms. Olson, who was named Wake County Teacher of the year in May of 2022!  Ms. Olson teaches special programs and is coach of the women's soccer team.  For more information about Ms. Olson and about the selection process and award, please follow this link.



IB EXAMS

BROUGHTON PRESENTS CHICAGO!

Congratulations to our Arts Department for presenting the fabulous musical Chicago!  We are so fortunate to have so many talented singers, dancers, actors, set-designers, instrumentalists! Congratulations also to our fantastic teachers who made the production possible!

IB EXTENDED ESSAYS

Our senior IB Diploma Programme students are proud to be finished with their IB Extended Essays.  The Extended Essay is a 4000-word research project and paper related to a research question developed by the student. This project and paper helps students to gain confidence in their academic research, writing, and critical thinking skills while they explore an issue about which they have great interest. Shown here, one of our seniors is sharing with a class of IB juniors about his research paper and providing tips for the development of an appropriate research question and research method.

NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY & CULTURE

Thanks to Jennifer Cates, a recent faculty retiree from the Broughton World Languages Department, for sharing her time and expertise in creating this lovely, informational display in honor of Native American Heritage Month! This exceptional display includes resources related to Native American history, culture, food, folklore, biographies, art, and many more topics.


JAZZ-DANCE FUSION CONCERT

BROUGHTON WCAP

We are excited that our in-house, daily news program WCAP is celebrating its 30th year! Congratulations to teacher, Brian Martin, and the fabulous WCAP students who have made great contributions over the past 3 decades! Shown here, WCAP alum and WRAL Reporter, Keenan Willard, is working with the WCAP staff to share about his experiences as a WCAP student and to mentor them on their reporting and production processes. IB GLOBAL POLITICS

Shown here, the IB Global Politics students are charting the diverse impacts of globalization on politics around the world.  As a global school, Broughton is pleased to be one of the only high schools in NC to offer the IB Global Politics course, which provides rich opportunities for students to learn about complex world and become empowered to make a positive difference.

WORLD LANGUAGES

Broughton's World Languages Department is excited to start the year with their innovative teaching in Mandarin, French, German, and Spanish from beginning to native-speaker levels! They are also very excited that our first cohort of Spanish immersion students has joined us this year!

We are very excited that our own Dr. Elena Ashburn has been named as the North Carolina Principal of the Year!!  Dr. Ashburn inspires all of us, everyday, to be better people, better students, and better educators.
